For the 12th annual Heritage Homes Tour, The Heritage Society of Austin is proud to showcase Old Enfield, one of Austins oldest and most prestigious central-city neighborhoods. Following last years Homes Tour in Pemberton Heights, which comprises the central portion of the Old West Austin Historic District (OWAHD), this years tour reaches south across Windsor Road to focus on the districts southern tract, which spawned residential development in the area in the early 1920s.
Architecture in Old Enfield, which originally was platted in 1922, represents an eclectic mix of early 20th-century revival styles, including Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Georgian and Tudor. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the Pease Mansion, also known as Woodlawn, a Greek Revival masterpiece designed by legendary master builder Abner Cook and built in 1853. Other architects of note who contributed designs to Old Enfield include John Staub of Houston, Atlee Ayres of San Antonio and Henry Thomson of Dallas.
To begin the tour, please arrive at Tour Headquarters which will be at the Pease Mansion, 6 Niles Road.
We need volunteers! If you are interested in helping out as a Homes Tour volunteer, please download this Volunteer Sign-Up Form and either fax or mail it back to us. You can also email us at volunteer@hsaustin.org or call 474-5198 x20.
