The Heritage Society of Austin is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007-2008 Waterloo Scholarship Essay Contest. The scholarship was launched this year and is funded by the generous donations of the Waterloo President’s Council Advisory Board. The intent of the contest is to engage young Austinites in an appreciation of the unique culture of Austin and its historic built environment.

We all have a unique and personal relationship to the buildings that surround us. The Heritage Society of Austin invited Austin-area graduating high school seniors to share their thoughts on how an historic building has uniquely shaped them. We asked participants to write an essay that describes how an Austin building older than 50 years has personally inspired, motivated, or prompted them to think differently about our community. Buildings can include any standing structure: a home, a school, a church, etc. within the city limits of Austin.
