Waterloo Scholarship
Essay Contest
We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.
Winston Churchill
We all have a unique and personal relationship to the buildings that surround us. The Heritage Society of Austin invites Austin-area graduating high school seniors to share their thoughts on how an historic building has uniquely shaped them.
Heritage Society issues a call for entries for a new essay contest. We will ask participants to write an essay that describes how an Austin building older than 50 years has personally inspired you, motivated you, or prompted you to think differently about your community. Buildings can include any standing structure: a home, a school, a church, etc. within the city limits of Austin.
Please include an address and a photograph of the building, and application Data Sheet.
Essays should be no fewer than 1200 words and will be judged on writing style and originality.
Gold Star Award: $1,500
Silver Star Award: $750
Bronze Star Award: $250
Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2008, 5:00 p.m. No late entries will be accepted. Winners will be announced by May 30, 2008.
